Bio
Alexis André, Ph.D, (b. 1982) is a French artist, researcher and designer who makes generative works behaving like living systems: they change with time, respond to the people who encounter them, and reveal new variations the longer one watches. Time and space recur throughout, from live clocks to woven textiles. Behind this lies a broader question about creation: how ideas arise, how they are realized, and how the process itself can be improved. André imagines a future in which such systems can offer each person an experience made for them.
His practice began with VJing in the early 2000s, moved through interactive installations and generative code, and now merges them all. A researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories since 2009, he created Tomonami, a co-creation system developed with craftspeople such as the ceramicist Yukio Yoshita and the Yuzen artist Ken Yotsui. Navette turned code into large-scale tapestries woven with the Manufacture Robert Four in Aubusson in its Néolice atelier. His work has been shown at YCAM, SIGGRAPH, Art Basel Miami, COP26 and, in 2025, at CODE+MATTER in Paris, and has been offered at Sotheby’s and Christie’s.
His work on the toy platform toio has earned him various design accolades, including the iF Gold Award (2019), and the Red Dot Award (2020).
